Where We Work:

HeartMind International supports mental health and psychosocial services in Jumla District in the northwestern Himalayan region of Nepal. Jumla is the capital of the Karnali Zone which has the among the lowest educational, health, and gender equity rankings in Nepal. There is one hospital for the zone and no government-supported mental health specialists. Based on fifteen years of research in the area, the rates of depression and anxiety have been found to be among the highest in the country, with one out of three adults suffering from mental health problems. The prevalence of attempted suicide 8%, and 20% of suicide attempts occur before the age of 25 years old. HeartMind International is supporting interventions to improve mental health in the region with a focus on the needs of adolescents to prevent mental health problems and suicide.
